West Coast Life was founded April 2, 1906 in San
Francisco, just 16 days before the city's devastating
earthquake and fire. An an indication of the company's
fighting spirit, West Coast Life was the first company
to offer a loan to the city for reconstruction. Within a
short period of time, West Coast Life began to grow with
the "Spirit of the West" that was noted by its rapid
development in Hawaii, the Philippines, China and the
Crown Colony of Hong Kong. In fact, West Coast Life was
the first American life insurance company to open doors
in those countries.
In 1997 the company was acquired by Protective Life
Insurance Company, founded in 1907. Protective Life,
with headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama, is a
subsidiary of Protective Life Corporation.
